Abstract: Even as production of goods and services has increasingly taken place on the global stage, the innovation system has remained much more localized, preventing emerging economies from fully participating in the production of innovation. We know from many disperse literatures of some factors that have made a global innovation system that incorporates emerging economies difficult – challenges in long- distance knowledge transfer, agglomeration effects, institutional voids, migration restrictions, and non-tariff barriers – but we still do not have a complete understanding of what makes emerging market innovation so difficult. We propose a two hour PDW which will take stock of what we know about emerging economy innovation and why it’s different from advanced economy innovation, discuss challenges associated with research in this area, and generate a discussion on the most important future research directions. In the first part of the PDW, participants will hear from a panel of distinguished scholars with extensive research experience in emerging economy innovation on these topics. In the second, interactive part of the PDW, a roundtable discussion combined with a breakout session will allow participants to exchange ideas and participate in setting a community-wide future research agenda with the aim of forming a global interdisciplinary research network for follow up collaboration.
