Call for Applications: TIM Doctoral Student Consortium 2023

The organizers of the consortium are Susan Cohen (University of Georgia) and Nel Dutt (Bocconi). For any questions, please email the organizers.

Date: TBD (likely Saturday, 5 August 2023)

Application Deadline: 1 June 2023

Who should apply: Ph.D. candidates researching technology, innovation, and related topics and who are preparing for the tenure-track job market. Preference will be given to doctoral candidates entering the job market this season.

Description: The consortium is organized around three main events:

  1. Job Market Bootcamp: We will discuss contemporary topics for the upcoming job marketing, such as how to approach the job market considering the current climate, and, how to prepare for virtual or in-person campus visits including job-talks and interviews. Faculty panelists will also share tips about finishing the dissertation and transitioning from being a student to a faculty member.
  2. Horizon 2028: Congrats, you landed your dream job! Now what? In small roundtable groups, we will work on a five-year visioning exercise (2023 + 5 = 2028) where you will envision your future research statement and then receive detailed feedback from a faculty mentor on how to plot your path from today to tenure.
  3. Research Mentorship: Participants will pitch their research (dissertation or job market paper) to a faculty mentor and receive personalized feedback.

We will also have informal networking sessions throughout and will likely have a group dinner.

Finally, we do not want financial constraints to preclude your participation in the consortium, so please let us know if you require assistance in paying the AOM registration fee. Scholarships are limited and you will be responsible for travel costs. There is a place to request assistance on the application form.

Faculty mentors: The program will include a keynote speech by Rajshree Agarwal (University of Maryland), and a diverse group of faculty mentors. Mid-Year Business Meeting Report

Paul Hünermund
Paul Hünermund, TIM Division Secretary

The TIM executive committee held their annual mid-year meeting on January 20–21, 2023, convening virtually to plan the upcoming annual conference and coordinate the division's activities for 2023. A key item on the agenda was developing a strategic plan for the next three years. Maryann Feldman, the division chair from Arizona State University, expressed her gratitude to the committee members for their ongoing voluntary contributions. The goals set out in the previous five-year strategic plan, including establishing a research committee and increasing engagement with the community beyond the annual August meeting, were successfully accomplished. Looking ahead, the division's strategic priorities include expanding its geographic scope, engaging more mid-career scholars, and further enhancing its mid-year research meetings.

In the following, Reps-at-large Colleen Cunningham (University of Utah) and Maria Roche (Harvard Business School) provided updates on the junior faculty and doctoral student consortia, respectively. Hila Lifshitz-Assaf (University of Warwick) and Markus Perkmann (Imperial College) shared their plans for a joint research workshop with the Organization Science journal, scheduled for September. On the second day of the meeting, newly appointed webmaster Jermain Kaminski (Maastricht University) and division secretary and social media coordinator Paul Hünermund (Copenhagen Business School) discussed the division's communication strategy. Additional items on the agenda included the division's annual awards, plans for upcoming community networking events, and a report on the division's finances.

The TIM Division is seeking to secure new sponsorships to support a range of community activities during its upcoming annual meeting. Previous sponsorship agreements have expired between the two virtual meetings amidst the pandemic, and the division is eager to secure new partnerships.
